Police identify man killed in Auckland motorway crash

Interpol has been called in to help find the family of a man who died in a crash on Auckland's Southern Motorway early this morning.

Aged in his early 20s, the young man was killed after his car collided with a truck just after midnight.

The impact was enough to eject the man from his vehicle. Emergency responders found him lying on the road and he died at the scene.

Part of an investigation headed by the serious crash unit will be to determine whether he was wearing a seatbelt.

A police spokesman said the dead man was the sole occupant of the car.

It is expected the serious crash unit might need several weeks to determine what happened but New Zealand Police and Interpol have begun the process of finding and notifying the dead man's next-of-kin.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 12.13am and the motorway was temporary closed between the Princess St on-ramp and the Mt Wellington Highway off-ramp.

Any available CCTV footage from motorway cameras will also be reviewed as part of the SCU's investigation.

The young man's name is not expected to be released today.
