KEY POINTS:
Police have identified the man who was killed when he was hit by a freight train on the Kapiti Coast early yesterday.
A Kapiti Coast police spokesman said today they would not releasing the name of the man, who was aged in his early 20s, until his family were notified.
The man was struck by the train as he walked along the tracks near Raumati, 3km west of Paraparaumu, about 1am.
Wellington Police communications manager Kaye Calder said the drivers of the northbound train were unable to stop in time to avoid him.
When the train managed to stop a crew member ran back and found the man on the side of the track with head injuries.
Emergency services were called but the man died at the scene.
The man's name was expected to be released tomorrow.
