Police are appealing for help from bus passengers in the Wellington suburb of Brooklyn after a woman was followed leaving a bus and sexually assaulted by another passenger.
The victim, a student, caught the Number 7 bus which had left the Wellington railway station at 9.30pm on Friday.
Detective Sergeant Zane Smith said the woman got off the bus at a stop near Brooklyn Road, and was followed by a male passenger who got off at the same stop.
The man followed the victim up a pedestrian walkway and through several suburban streets to Tanera Street, where the assault occurred.
Mr Smith said lots of people were on the Number 7 service that night.
"It's critical that we speak with everyone who was on that bus. They may be able to identify the offender for us."
The victim has described her attacker as being a caucasian in his 20s, about 1.7m tall. The man was wearing a grey top with two pockets at the front, black pants and a dark green cap with a narrow peak.
Police have released a sketch of the offender and would like to hear from anyone who recognises the person.
