Police are hunting two men who robbed and assaulted three French tourists in the Far North early this morning.
The male tourists, all in their 20s, were in a campervan at a lay-by south of Mangamuka, about 36km east of Kaitaia, when a man knocked on the window and demanded money.
After the tourists handed over money, the man broke in through the campervan door and was followed in by a second man.
They assaulted two of the tourists and stole some property before leaving in an old square-shaped car, possibly dark red or brown in colour.
One of the tourists suffered facial injuries and needed medical treatment.
The offenders are described as Maori, aged between 20 and 30. Police said it was possible a third man was driving the car.
