KEY POINTS:
Wellington police are looking for four men and a white Subaru WRX linked to three burglaries in the city early today.
The men fled police when they were disturbed trying to siphon petrol from another vehicle in Miramar, smashing into a police patrol car.
Inspector Steve Darroch, of police central communications, said the first burglary was in Darlington Road, Miramar at 12.30am when a rock was thrown through the window of a Four Square store.
The second burglary happened at 1.46am in Mills Road, Brooklyn, when a dairy window was smashed and cigarettes removed.
The third burglary was at 2.22am when a crowbar was used to try to get entry to BP Ngaio.
At 3.27am the men were disturbed by police siphoning petrol in Miramar.
"The offenders fled in the Subaru colliding, with the parked police vehicle," Mr Darroch said.
"The driver side rear window of the vehicle was smashed by an officer with his baton. The offenders decamped the scene and to date have not been located."
He said the white vehicle was believed to be a 2007 WRX Subaru, probably turbo.
It had a smashed rear passenger window on the driver side and damage to the front of the vehicle and panels on the driver side.
He described the offenders as four male Caucasians. The driver was wearing a camouflage jacket.
He appealed to anyone with information about the vehicle or the offenders to phone Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000.
