Police hunt Wellington attackers

Wellington Police investigating a serious assault in Tory Street early this morning have released CCTV images of a person they would like to speak to, who was in the area at the time of the incident.

A 25-year-old man remains in a serious but stable condition in Wellington Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard of the Wellington CIB says the victim and two male friends were approached by a group of men opposite the Tournament carpark on Tory Street at around 3.50am.

The victim sustained significant head injuries.

One of his friends received an ankle injury and was treated in hospital.

Police say they would like to speak to a man seen in the CCTV images, and to the two people he was with.

The photographed man was wearing distinctive wooden rosary beads with a cross around his neck and had a tribal tattoo on his arm. Police say he is around 1.8 metres tall, of solid build with short cropped hair, and was wearing a purple t-shirt, dark grey or blue jeans and grey canvas shoes.

He was with two other Pacific Island males who police would also like to speak to.

They are described as being aged in their early to mid twenties.

One of them was of medium to solid build, around six foot tall, with brown spiky hair, wearing dark blue or black jeans, a blue or green t-shirt and white shoes, with a tribal tattoo on his right arm.

Anyone who either witnessed the assault or noticed any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Courtenay Place and Tory Street between 3am and 4:30am are urged to contact Wellington Police as soon as possible on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
