A car chase through Masterton ended with the driver escaping on foot and his passenger being arrested near Woodville.
The two men were stopped by police on Ngaumutawa Rd in Masterton for a registration check on Tuesday night.
The driver fled in the car when police confirmed the vehicle had been reported as stolen.
Senior Sergeant Jymahl Glassey said police chased the car through Masterton and into the Woodville area, where the driver pulled into a property and fled, while his passenger was arrested.
Police are seeking help from the public in locating the driver of the stolen silver 1991 Mazda 626 stationwagon.
