KEY POINTS:
Police are hunting a hit and run driver after a man was killed in the Northland town of Paihia early today.
The 36-year-old victim, who has not been named, was walking home on Marsden Rd about 3.40am today when he was knocked down by a vehicle travelling north-west towards the Waitangi roundabout in Puketona Rd.
He died at the scene in spite of efforts by passers-by to revive him.
Police said they were looking for a maroon coloured, four-door vehicle with significant damage to the front.
Detective Inspector Mike Pannett said they were following positive leads but anyone with information should contact the Kaikohe police.
