Wellington police hunting an escaped prisoner have warned the man was serving time for kidnapping and aggravated robbery and is considered dangerous.
They said 30-year-old Reon Kiwi escaped from Mt Crawford Prison at about 12.30pm and should not be approached.
Detective Sergeant Martin Todd said police were treating Kiwi as dangerous because of his convictions, which included kidnapping and two aggravated robberies.
Police have called for sightings of the part-Maori man who is described as of solid build, 1.8 metres tall and with a tattoo of a glove on his right hand and the letters 'FTW' on his right wrist.
Police asked Mirimar residents to report any car thefts or suspicious activity in the area to the police as soon as possible.
Police said Kiwi was last seen wearing grey trousers, a grey top with the letters 'WRP' on the back of it and black work boots.
He could possibly be wearing green waterproof over trousers and a high visibility vest.
