Police hope the arrest of three teenagers in relation to an after-ball party bashing that left a 17-year-old student critically injured will ease tensions and plans for retribution.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley said police were aware of plans for possibly retribution this weekend but he urged students to leave the matter with the courts.
"There's a lot of talk about students from various South Auckland schools that are trying to band together and pick fights with other school members. We know about it, the police are ready for it and the police will act to stop it from happening."
Three teens, aged 15, 17 and 19, appeared in the Youth Court yesterday charged with assault.
Police sought a two-week remand in custody and opposed bail. The hearing was adjourned until this morning and the trio were remanded in custody overnight.
Police said more serious charges may be laid, depending on the victim's medical progress.
Mr Whitley delivered news of the arrests to the victim's family at Auckland City Hospital.
"The family were happy with the arrest but they just want their son to wake up," he said.
The youth was tonight still in a drug-induced coma and had recently had his skull cracked to relieve pressure on his still-swelling brain.
Mr Whitley also visited De La Salle College and told senior students of the arrests.
"They are still pretty stunned. Naturally they were happy with the outcome but it's not going to make their school friend any better."
