Police hail TV cameras' role in tracking down offenders

Closed-circuit TV (CCTV) camera footage that will be used in the prosecution of two youths allegedly involved in a serious assault has again highlighted the value of the technology, police say.

Detective Sergeant Brett Calkin, of the Palmerston North CIB, said the cameras, installed in and around the city's square, acted as a deterrent to crime and helped police apprehend offenders.

"It is hard for an offender to deny committing a crime when they are confronted with video evidence," he said.

The comments follow an unprovoked assault in the Palmerston North Square about 1.20am yesterday.

A 21-year-old man was allegedly set upon by two youths who knocked him to the ground and punched and kicked him about the head and body. He received bruising to the face and body.

Mr Calkin said the incident was recorded on CCTV cameras.

Two youths, aged 15 and 17, will appear in Palmerston North Youth Court today, charged with injuring with intent.
