KEY POINTS:
Taupo police are furious they wasted time and resources investigating a false claim by a 13-year-old girl that she was abducted from her home last month.
The girl said she was forced by three men into a waiting vehicle from outside her Terence Street home about 9.30am on January 7.
She told police she managed to escape her captors.
Detective Rick Bagley said as a result of a lengthy investigation police had established the complaint was false.
The girl would be referred to the Youth Aid section.
"False complaints and especially false complaints of this nature are resource and time consuming," Mr Bagley said.
"It is the genuine victims of crime who are affected by false complaints as there are only limited police resources."
