KEY POINTS:
Police say they have found the knife believed to have been used to fatally stab Austin Hemmings in central Auckland last week.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley said two knives had been recovered from the "immediate area" since Saturday.
"We believe one of them is most likely the weapon used to kill Mr Hemmings but both have been sent to the ESR for forensic examination," Mr Whitley said.
He said a mobile police station would be at the Mills Lane site this week.
"While we've made significant progress over the past six days, we are still focused on finding the taxi driver who we believe has driven the offender - albeit unwittingly - from near the scene of Mr Hemmings' death," Mr Whitley said.
The Herald reported today that police had heard from several taxi drivers yesterday but not the one who drove the alleged killer from the city to Mangere or the Mangere Bridge area at about 5.30pm on Thursday.
Mr Hemmings died within minutes of being stabbed in the chest after going to the aid of a woman who called for his help.
The woman, who was allegedly being threatened by a man she knew, was punched in the face but escaped.
A 45-year-old sickness beneficiary has been charged with assaulting the woman and police have said further, more serious, charges are likely to follow.
Police are asking anyone with information about the taxi fare or murder weapon is asked to phone Operation Lane on (09) 302-6567.
