KEY POINTS:
Police have found a knife believed to have been used to stab a two year-old Te Aroha boy.
Spokesman Andrew McAlley said police had spoken to a member of the boy's family but no arrest had been made.
He said the toddler received a stab wound to his abdomen, just below the navel.
"Given the age and size of the child, any stab wound is deemed to be serious," Mr McAlley said.
He said police would be canvassing the area and conducting a wider scene examination today.
Mr McAlley said the family were co-operating with the police inquiry but he would not comment on whether police would support the child being returned to the care of his family.
"That would be decided inter-agency and it would be a bit premature to comment on that at this stage," Mr McAlley said.
The stabbing happened about 3pm on Monday.
The boy is still in Waikato Hospital and reported to be in a stable condition.
