Northland police hunting Black Power gang member Nathan Fenton in connection with the murder of his teenage girlfriend in Whangarei have found the car he was travelling in.
Police said the stolen BMW had been found down a bank, in a dense area of forest, east of Russell, in the Bay of Islands.
It is believed to be on Russell Road, about 5km from the intersection with Kempthorne Road. Police have cordoned off the area.
They said it was unclear whether the car had crashed or had been pushed over the bank, but there was no sign of Fenton so far.
Police have been looking 31-year-old Fenton since August 27 when the beaten body of Mairina Dunn, 17, was found in a house at Otangarei, Whangarei.
He was seen yesterday morning in Russell with 28-year-old Eileen Verna Everitt - a former partner. It is believed the pair had been hiding out together in the past week.
Up to 40 armed police spent yesterday blocking roads, checking ferries and searching cars after Fenton and Everitt fled the town in the BMW.
