KEY POINTS:
Police are growing increasingly concerned about a Whakatane man missing for more than a month.
Gavin Ferguson, 42, was last seen on March 10 and has not been in contact with family or friends since.
Police say Mr Ferguson's disappearance is uncharacteristic and they are anxious for sightings of him or his vehicle.
A keen kayaker, Mr Ferguson visited family in Whakatane on March 10 and is believed to have had his pink kayak/surf-ski on the back of his 1985 bronze Mitsubishi ute.
His bankcard was used at an ATM in the town two days later, at 1am, just a few hours before he was due to start his job as a fitter-welder.
Senior Sergeant Bruce Jenkins said Mr Ferguson was conscientious and would not have missed work without telling someone.
"As time goes on, the more we become concerned about his whereabouts and safety."
Mr Jenkins said Mr Ferguson lived alone and had no children, but there was nothing to suggest he was depressed.
The missing man is European, 1.7m in height, and of medium build. He has grey eyes and a shaved head. Mr Jenkins said he could be anywhere in the North Island and the key was finding his flat-bed ute, registration LW1831.
