KEY POINTS:
Police and forensic experts were today examining the home of a toddler who died after she was taken to hospital yesterday suffering from severe burns.
Police are treating the death of the 22-month-old girl, who has not yet been named, as suspicious.
The toddler reportedly suffered burns from scalding about 5pm Thursday but was not admitted to Tokoroa Hospital until 9.50am yesterday.
She died about an hour later in front of grieving relatives.
A hospital spokesman said three doctors and several nurses worked on trying to keep the girl alive and afterwards were offered counselling.
Detective senior sergeant Mark Loper of the Rotorua CIB said said preliminary results of a post-mortem examination being carried out this morning would be known later today.
But a final result was not expected until forensic tests had been completed, Mr Loper said.
"Police are speaking with a number of people and are trying to build a picture of the child, the family and the circumstances surrounding this tragedy."
