A car owner and a neighbour were forced to retreat from youths spoiling for a fight after catching them in the act of breaking into a car yesterday.
The group of six teenagers were bailed up in the Featherston School grounds by a police dog team after they fled the scene at Fox St around 3am.
Police were called after the car's owner and a neighbour backed off from four of the youths, who were making threats while two others ran off.
Two patrol cars, including a dog handler, arrived within minutes and tracked the youths to the Featherston School grounds. One of the youths suffered dog bites after attempting to kick the police dog, said police. All six were taken to Masterton police station for processing.
Police recovered a set of multiple car keys from the youths, which they said was how they gained access to the car. The car was undamaged, but the petrol card and the car's first aid kit had been taken. The first aid kit was discovered a short distance away, apparently used to try and stem a bleeding wound from earlier that night.
