Edge the stabbed police dog has returned home to Hawkes Bay after an emergency dash to the vet by helicopter.
He was trying to subdue a fugitive, who had started stabbing himself with a knife, when he was stabbed.
Edge's handler, Constable Dave Whyte, said he didn't think Edge would make it.
"At the scene of the attack he was totally unresponsive and bleeding profusely."
Specialist soft tissue veterinary surgeon Barbara Kirby of Massey University in Palmerston North expects Edge to make a full recovery.
