The Auckland police dog squad were called to help find the driver of a blood-stained crashed car early this morning.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the driver ran away after crashing into a barrier on the Northern Motorway between the Shelly Beach overbridge and the Fanshawe St exit just before 6.15am. "The person has then run up to the beach, so we sent the dog unit in."
Police were concerned the person may have been injured, as there was blood in the car, she said.
However, the scent of the person had stopped nearby, so police believe they may have been picked up by another person. The registration of the car had been checked and police would be following up with the registered owners today.
