KEY POINTS:
Detectives believe the death of an elderly West Auckland woman is suspicious and have called in the specialist dive squad to search for "items of interest".
Dorothy Beryl Campbell, 84, was found dead in her Henderson home on February 22.
Police at first believed the 84-year-old had died from natural causes and referred the matter to the coroner. But the case was reopened on Tuesday.
Police are believed to have been told that a man killed her and then tried to commit suicide. The man was initially reported as being in a coma but has since improved. Detective Senior Sergeant Jill Rogers would not reveal more about police dealings with him other than to say "he's progressing, he's conscious".
She said the police dive squad would return today to search two lakes off Hillwell Drive, Western Heights, looking for items of interest.
The death was being treated as suspicious but Ms Rogers stopped short of saying it was a homicide inquiry. An autopsy on Mrs Campbell's body was inconclusive in establishing a cause of death but further inquiries were being made.
