KEY POINTS:
Hamilton police are liaising with Interpol over the possibility of extraditing former Waikato doctor David Gilgen from Australia.
Gilgen has been struck off the medical register and is facing six criminal charges, three of which relate to forging prescriptions and another three of using those prescriptions.
Detective Sergeant Robbie Herman says there is a lot to consider before a final decision is made on whether to go ahead with an extradition. The issues include public interest, the seriousness of any offence, whether a prosecution will succeed and the severity of the penalty. Police currently do not know Gilgen's exact location in Australia.
