KEY POINTS:
Police have recovered the gun from a shooting in Woodville after a love triangle erupted into two brawls and they are confident there will be arrests next week.
The 31-year-old man shot in the leg during one of the fights on Thursday night underwent surgery today in Palmerston North hospital, Senior Sergeant Greg Hudson said.
A tomahawk and a variety of garden tools were used in the fights, which were not gang related, but were between locals.
Police were pretty confident there would be arrests out of the investigation, Mr Hudson said.
Both scenes had now been cleared and a low calibre firearm had been located. Witnesses were interviewed today though police still had to talk to the victim.
Some of the people hurt in the fights had refused medical treatment and "some of the offenders and some of the victims are one and the same", he added.
It is believed the love triangle involved two men and a woman.
In the first incident, a group of people went to a house on Atkinson Street at 9.30pm where there was a confrontation and an assault.
"That group has then returned to an address in Ormond Street a short time later, and another group has arrived and another confrontation has taken place involving weapons."
The victim had resided at Atkinson Street, where the first confrontation took place.
"Alcohol was involved and a lot of the group were very uncooperative towards police," Mr Hudson said.
