Police are condemning the organisers of a South Island motorcycle rally in which participants are challenged to cover 2000km in just 48 hours.
The TT2000 is being held this weekend.
Tasman District Road Policing Manager Inspector Jenni Richardson said the rally challenges riders to visit 150 locations across the entire South Island.
She said that while the event's organisers have covered their own liability by insisting on licensed riders and legal bikes, and by giving advice on speed and fatigue, there's no hiding the fact that the event is essentially a race.
She said a rider taking part in the event two years ago was killed in Golden Downs, near Nelson
