Police Commissioner Rob Robinson has been re-appointed for another two years.
Prime Minister Helen Clark said yesterday Mr Robinson was outstanding and deserved the extension.
Marked improvements had been made in operational, administrative and financial management practices under Mr Robinson's leadership since he was appointed in 2000.
"I think he's been an outstanding commissioner, and I think he is held in high regard within the force as well as among the general public," the Prime Minister said.
"When he was appointed, I made the comment that he is a cop's cop and I think that explains why he has had the respect that he has gathered."
Asked about Mr Robinson's role in appointing Assistant Commissioner Clint Rickards, who has been at the centre of police rape allegations, Helen Clark said it would be "fairly mean spirited" for people to say Mr Robinson should not be re-appointed because of that.
Mr Robinson had risen to the top of the force on his merits, she said.
His re-appointment ensured continuity and stability in the leadership of the police.
It would enable him to lead the police through any administrative implications flowing from the commission of inquiry into police conduct.
Mr Robinson was acting commissioner from January to June 2000, when he was formally appointed commissioner. He started his police career in 1975.
Senior positions he has held include Hutt district commander, Midland regional commander and assistant commissioner.
Police Minister George Hawkins said Mr Robinson was the first commissioner in more than 20 years to have his appointment extended.
That was testament to the "superb" job he had done since 2000, Mr Hawkins said.
National Party law and order spokesman Tony Ryall said he had no concerns about Mr Robinson's performance, but believed he faced a huge challenge obtaining adequate resources for police to do their job.
"He needs more [Government] support to make sure he can get on top of serious crime," Mr Ryall said.
"He has been handicapped by the most incompetent minister of police since Adam was a cowboy.
"For him to be more effective, he needs another minister, one who knows what's going on."
