Police chase motorcyclist faces charges

A motorbike rider will undergo surgery today after breaking a leg while being chased by police last night.

Police said that the male rider attacked a police officer smashing his jaw after being pulled over near Tokoroa.

The offender fled the scene and a chase began after he was spotted about 5km away.

He drove his motorbike into a tavern car park and in trying to escape his pursuers smashed into the police cars,and broke a leg.

Police said the man was under police guard at Waikato Hospital where he would undergo surgery on his broken leg today.

As soon as he was well enough, he would appear in court facing assault and motoring charges.

The injured police officer was recovering at home.
