KEY POINTS:
A police car was rammed during a high speed chase last night.
Road spikes were laid four times before the chased car was halted and a man arrested.
The incident started when a police officer arriving for work in Ngaruawahia, Waikato, at 10pm heard a car doing burn-outs.
He went to check what was happening and saw a new Nissan Skyline speed away.
During the 25-minute chase the offender's car is estimated to have reached speeds up to 170km/h and hit one of the patrol cars.
The car was chased north to Meremere before heading back down SH1.
The Nissan's tyres disintegrated before the car finally came to a halt, shortly before a fourth set of road spikes.
The driver then allegedly assaulted a police officer before being subdued.
The man, aged in his 30s, faces a variety of charges including assaulting police and dangerous driving.
