A police car was deliberately rammed in an 8km car chase through Taupo yesterday.
No one was hurt in the crash.
The pursuit began when police tried to stop a car after it was seen doing "wheelies" at an intersection in the town about 8.25pm, Sergeant Mark Robertson of Taupo police said.
The car wouldn't stop and police chased it for about 8km before pulling out of the pursuit.
A police car was then rammed before the offending car drove into the path of oncoming traffic, which had to pull over to avoid crashing, Mr Robertson said in a statement.
The car was found later on a forestry track about 20km north of Taupo.
A woman passenger was arrested but the driver had fled.
Police were looking for a 25-year-old man. He was not believed to be dangerous.
