Police have yet to decide whether to charge one of their own staff after a woman and a baby in a pram were hit on a pedestrian crossing in Hamilton East yesterday.
The woman received grazing to her arm as she tried to prevent the pram being hit by the car but neither she nor the child needed medical attention.
Acting area commander for Hamilton police, Detective Senior Sergeant Russell Le Prou, said the officer was driving a marked police car along Grey St about 2pm.
She had slowed as she approached the crossing but hadn't seen the woman and the pram in time.
"Indications are that it was a very low-speed impact," Mr Le Prou said.
Witnesses said an ambulance had been called but the woman didn't need hospital treatment.
Several people on Grey St said the female constable was very upset by the incident and that she had been taken away by the ambulance in shock.
However, Waikato police communications manager Kris McGehan said this was incorrect and that the officer returned to the Bridge St police station.
Mr Le Prou said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid in relation to the incident.
