Police were called when an "aggro" seller on internet auction site Trade Me threatened a potential buyer.
Trade Me staff called police in Wanaka to deal with the cyber rage incident, The Southland Times reported.
A Trade Me seller was dealing with a Christchurch buyer last month when the transaction faltered after a difference of opinion, Senior Constable Ian Henderson, of Wanaka, said.
The Wanaka-based seller then sent messages to the buyer saying "cough up or I'll come round" and other indirect threats, Mr Henderson said.
Police were asked to contact the man, who later apologised.
