Police are appealing for help to identify a man found in a park with serious head injuries this morning.
A bus driver found the man lying in the bushes of a park near the Featherston RSA in the Wairarapa, about 7am.
Detective Sergeant Bill van Woerkom of Masterton CIB said it was not known how the man was injured or how long he had been lying on the ground.
"We don't know as yet who the man is. He's European, possibly in his 30s to 40s, has very short brown hair," Mr Van Woerkom said.
"When he was found he was wearing khaki coloured camouflage style trousers, a blue jacket and brown shoes."
The man was assessed at Masterton Hospital and has since been airlifted to Wellington Hospital for treatment.
He has head and facial injuries however his condition is described as serious but stable.
Part of Fitzherbert and Fox streets had been cordoned off while police conducted a scene examination, and they were expected to reopen about midday.
Traffic was being diverted along neighbouring streets.
People who had any information about who the man was or how and when he was injured were asked to contact Masterton police.
"Any information at all will help our investigation," Mr van Woerkom said.
"Local people or passing motorists may have seen or heard something that will indicate what has happened and where. We don't know as yet if the injuries happened overnight or early this morning."
