A "cowardly and disgraceful" attack on two officers in Dunedin's Octagon shows why police support the earlier closure of city bars, a senior commander says.
The male and female constables were near the Octagon about 4am yesterday when they were sent to a developing altercation as reported by a member of the public. The fight - between two brothers - started after one of them refused to join the other in going home "after a night in town", Dunedin Clutha Waitaki area commander Inspector Jason Guthrie said.
Police were at the scene within a minute of the call.
One of the brothers punched the male officer in the head, before punching the female officer in the back of her head, knocking her to the ground. He then punched her several times in the face, he said.
"This can only be described as a cowardly and disgraceful attack by a male on a female," Mr Guthrie said.
