KEY POINTS:
Police believe alcohol and speed were factors in a boy racer crash in which two men were killed on Auckland's North Shore early this morning.
Milford resident Ratu Victor Vikash Junior Lal, 23, and his 18-year-old passenger Adam Gary Bennett Herrick, of Glenfield, died when their car crashed into a concrete barrier and rolled about 1.15am.
Both men worked in the construction industry.
Serious Crash Unit head Senior Sergeant Bill Russell said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, which happened at the intersection of Birkenhead Ave and Pupuke Rd.
"We believe some alcohol found in the car was purchased from a nearby North Shore outlet a short time before the crash, so we'll be making inquiries there as part of our investigation into these senseless deaths," he said.
"We'd very much like to hear from the driver of the other vehicle that was travelling in the same direction as that of the deceased's moments before it crashed so if anyone has information about who the other driver was, they should contact us."
Residents said they heard a "tremendous crash", followed by silence, and then saw several fire trucks, an ambulance, and police cars.
They said street races were common in the area.
Mr Davey said police would like to speak to anyone who saw the cars racing and the crash.
