KEY POINTS:
A police constable is recovering at home after being attacked by a motorist he stopped for a minor traffic infringement.
Police said today that when the officer asked the driver to undergo a breath test after stopping him in Rotorua last night, he was punched several times in the head and body.
The officer managed to call for help and the driver was arrested at the scene by backup police.
The injured officer was admitted to hospital where a wound above his eye was stitched. He also suffered bruising and swelling to other parts of his head and body.
He was later discharged.
A 33-year-old Rotorua doorman appeared in Rotorua District Court charged with injuring the constable, resisting arrest, refusing to accompany police, and refusing to supply a blood sample.
He was remanded without plea to May 14.
