A man accused of attacking a female Hawke's Bay police officer early yesterday will appear in court on Thursday.
Wairoa Constable Karen Eivers pulled the man over for drink-driving about 2.40am yesterday and began excess breath alcohol procedures. He allegedly threw her to the ground and dragged her a short distance as he tried to walk away, Sergeant Matt King said.
Other officers who went to her aid were also allegedly assaulted, and even after being handcuffed the man continued spitting at the officers, Mr King said.
The man was charged with driving with excess alcohol, four charges of assaulting police, and three of resisting arrest.
He was bailed to appear in Wairoa District Court on Thursday.
Mr King said Ms Eivers was "fine" and she had returned to work last night.
