Police were at Sumner Beach in Christchurch this evening after a report of a "water incident".
A police spokeswoman said police were determining whether a search and rescue operation was required after the callout.
However, a search near Shag Rock at the northwestern end of the beach found no sign of anyone in the water or a boat.
Police units stood down at 10.30pm.
