A scene examination would be carried out today.
A homicide investigation is underway in Nelson after an incident last night in which a man died.
Police were called to the scene of a “serious incident” at Orchard St in Stoke shortly after 7pm.
Detective Inspector Lex Bruning said a man with critical injuries was taken to hospital but he had since died.
“Our thoughts are with his family and police will work to support them through this difficult time as we investigate to give them answers,” Bruning said.
Those involved are believed to be known to each other, police said.
Police are appealing for sightings of a white BMW X5 station wagon, registration BMW693.
The vehicle is not listed as stolen.
Bruning said this morning that a scene guard remained in place at Orchard St and investigations staff were working to determine what happened.
A scene examination would be carried out today and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
