Police arrest takeaway robbery suspect

A special court sitting is being organised in Waikato Hospital today for a man who was arrested for the armed robbery of a Chinese takeaway shop.

On Monday night, the 29-year-old man allegedly tried to rob the Tokoroa takeaway and restaurant at the Aotea shops just before 10pm.

During the robbery, the shop's owner, 25-year-old Zhuofeng "Titan" Jiang, wrestled the gun from the man and allegedly shot him in the leg.

Tokoroa CIB Detective Sergeant Kevan Verry said police executed a search warrant and arrested a Tokoroa man last night.

The man was found with a gunshot wound to his leg.

He was taken to Waikato Hospital and was under police guard, Mr Verry said.

The man was charged with assault with intent to rob, commission of a crime with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.

A special court sitting may be held at the hospital today for the man, Mr Verry said.

A 30-year-old man was also arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact, he said.

He was appearing in Tokoroa District Court today.
