A child on a toy scooter was hit by a Porsche which was trying to overtake traffic queued at an intersection, police say.
Officers investigating the incident are appealing for witnesses after the boy was struck around 8am on Friday while he tried to cross the road at the intersection of Redruth Ave and Selwyn St in Christchurch.
At the time of the incident there was a queue of vehicles stopped on Redruth Ave on the western side of the junction, Constable Kurt Gillibrand said.
"The front vehicle is understood to have signalled for a small boy travelling north along the west side of Selwyn St to cross the road in front of them," he said.
"However, after the boy crossed the road, another vehicle, similar to a Porsche, with dark coloured windows, mounted the pavement on Redruth Ave to undertake the queue of traffic and turn left onto Selwyn St, colliding with the back of the boy's scooter.
