KEY POINTS:
The man accused of kidnapping his grandson Jayden Headley could make things easier for himself by giving up the boy, police say.
Jayden, 6, was taken from the Hamilton public library in August and it is believed his maternal grandfather Dick Headley is hiding him.
Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Page said today Headley needed to realise the matter had gone far enough.
"Handing himself in may be a mitigating factor...to identify that he's taken steps to reduce the amount of impact that this offending may have had on young Jayden."
He said that if Headley handed over Jayden police would consider bailing him although he would have to stand trial for kidnapping.
Mr Page said police believed a number of people in different locations may be assisting Headley while others were stonewalling the inquiry. Headley needed to take time to think about what he was doing, not only with Jayden but also with the people around him who were providing assistance and might be making themselves liable to criminal offences.
He said some media organisations were offering rewards for solving the case but he urged anyone with information to contact police.
"The police are focused on Jayden's safety and that's paramount."
The boy's father Chris Jones has custody of his son and hopes to have him home by Christmas.
Jayden's mother, Kay Skelton, 35, has been in jail since October 25 for contempt of court for disobeying a court order to produce her son or explain her part in the case.
She also faces a kidnapping charge.
