Police are appealing for information about an aggravated robbery in Palmerston North last night.
The robbery happened at the Seddon Street Food Market around 7.05pm. An offender entered the store and pointed a firearm at the store's proprietor and ordered him to sit on the floor.
The offender then hit the man around the back of the head and left empty-handed as an audible alarm sounded.
The victim chased the offender out of the store along Montrose Place and left into Manchester Street. Just before the intersection with Aberdeen Avenue the offender got into the passenger seat of a parked silver vehicle believed to be a Subaru.
The victim was approached by a woman in a car who asked him what was going on. The female witness followed the vehicle down Aberdeen Avenue, into Wood Street and then into Featherston Street where she lost sight of it.
Police are hoping to speak to anyone else who saw the incident, the offender or the car.
The offender is described as a European man of medium build and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
Anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Gary Milligan at Palmerston North Police on 06 351 0600.
