Police and dogs catch four after Palmerston North chase ends in crash

A vehicle has crashed into a truck following a police chase through the streets of Palmerston North tonight.

Manawatu Area Commander Inspector Sarah Stewart said police, patrolling Pioneer Highway, signalled to a vehicle to stop when they noticed it was a car which had been stolen from Palmerston North Hospital.

The silver saloon failed to stop and police gave chase about 6.48pm, she said.

"Road spikes were deployed and despite slowing down considerably, the vehicle later crashed into a truck at low speed, approximately 10 minutes after the car first fled from police."

Stewart said all four occupants of the car ran from the crash scene at the corner of Napier Rd and Keith St, but were later apprehended by police with the help of dogs.

"The four were lucky not to need medical treatment," she said.

Three males and a female were arrested.

"People who choose to flee from police are putting themselves, other members of the public and police at risk of serious injury or death," Stewart said, offering a warning to those contemplating fleeing flashing lights.

"Travelling at high speeds gives them and other road users little time to react.

"Furthermore, drivers who flee will be held to account and put before the courts."
