KEY POINTS:
A tramper found unconscious on Fiordland's Greenstone Track may have collapsed after eating poisonous berries, emergency services say.
The man, believed to be in his mid-40s, was discovered alone and unconscious on the track on Friday evening by another group of walkers who raised the alarm, a St John Ambulance spokesman said.
The man was flown by rescue helicopter to Lakes District Hospital, in Queenstown, where he needed medical assistance to breathe. He was later transferred to Dunedin Hospital for further treatment.
It was suspected he may have consumed poisonous berries while walking the track, before becoming unwell and collapsing, the St John spokesman told the Otago Daily Times.
It was not known what sort of berries the man had eaten, or if he was from New Zealand.
The man was recovering in Dunedin Hospital yesterday.
