Prime Minister Helen Clark is expected to open the new Ratana Archive Centre near Wanganui today.
On Sunday more than 30,000 people are expected at Ratana Pa, near Wanganui, to celebrate the birthday of the founder of the Ratana movement.
Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana died in 1939 but his spiritual and political movement still has at least 40,000 adherents. January 25 is one of the most important days in their year.
Last year there were 30,000 at the settlement on January 25, the day when bands parade down the street and the temple is packed for a special service.
The movement's secular political side has a historic connection with the Labour Party, and politicians are usually welcomed on to the marae on January 24. Their speeches are heard and responded to.
This year Helen Clark is expected today and Opposition leader Don Brash is expected tomorrow.
