Prime Minister John Key will hold a summit with Association of Southeast Asian (Asean) leaders when he is in Vietnam in October.
It would be the first time New Zealand and Asean leaders had such a formal meeting, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray Mr McCully said.
The summit would allow New Zealand to strengthen ties with Asean countries, he said.
The summit will be held at the around the same time as the East Asia Summit.
Mr McCully has been in Hanoi for a series of regional meetings.
Asean countries include: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
