The Prime Minister is preparing to attend Anzac Day services at Gallipoli for his first time.
Mr Key has joined the New Zealand contingent in Turkey, which includes 22 veterans, 23 secondary school students and Defence Force staff who have travelled to Gallipoli for the 95th Anniversary of the landings on Anzac Day.
The veterans had relatives who fought in the five-month-long battle as the Allied Forces tried to gain control of the Dardanelle Straits.
They have viewed the battlegrounds and major commemorative sites, ahead of tomorrow's ceremonies.
John Key has met with the Governor of the Canakkale Province, which encompasses the peninsula where the troops landed in 1915.
After a discussion with the Governor, Mr Key says New Zealand and Turkey have come a long way and there is now a genuine feeling of respect.
"We are now very good friends and the Turkish Government is very generous in their support of New Zealand and New Zealanders."
A total of 2721 New Zealanders died during the campaign
Tomorrow's main service is followed by separate New Zealand, Australian and Turkish services. An estimated 10,000 people are expected to attend.
Mr Key has also announced a photo competition for local children, which gives the winner a chance to join next year's official delegation at Gallipoli.
