Structure will be a key word for Wairarapa-Bush in their non-championship rugby match with Poverty Bay at Memorial Park, Masterton tomorrow.
While a win would obviously be gratefully accepted by the home side, even more important is a performance where the basics have been done well.
After all this is their final dress rehearsal before their NPC first division programme kicks off next weekend against Buller in Masterton, and they need be right on their mettle by then.
There are though at least three other good reasons why Wairarapa-Bush will lack nothing on the score of motivation tomorrow.
First they are playing for a trophy donated in memory of the late Jeremy David who as a talented youngster represented both Wairarapa-Bush and Poverty Bay.
Secondly, they will also be remembering the services to local rugby of Greytown stalwart Lloyd McIntosh, a life member of the Wairarapa-Bush union who passed away last week.
And thirdly, there will be a desire for revenge after Poverty Bay humbled Wairarapa-Bush in the NPC third division grand final two seasons ago.
Individually too there will be plenty of incentive for players to produce the goods. Some places in the starting line-up for the Buller game are still very much up for grabs and this is the last opportunity for them to be grasped.
In the backs there remains questions marks over who is the number one halfback, either Eketahuna's Hamish McKenzie or Gladstone's James Bruce.
There is little between them as passers of the ball, but McKenzie is probably the more dangerous runner of the two and may also have a better kicking game. However, when the going gets tough the more rugged Bruce tends to come into his own. He relishes the chance to mix it with the opposing loose forwards, very probably a legacy from playing at hooker as a schoolboy.
Also looking to make every post a winner tomorrow will be utility backs Duncan Rutherford (Gladstone) and Tommy Harmon (Pioneer). They owe their places in the starting XV to the unavailability of Peato Lafaele and Francis Seumanata who are both in the Northern United side which will be seeking the Jubilee Cup title in Wellington club rugby.
Rutherford will be at fullback and Harmon on the wing and, who knows, big efforts from them could see the "imports" on the reserve bench for the Buller match.
In the forwards it is the front rowers who will take centre stage for Wairarapa-Bush
Team management have decided to rest first choice prop Dylan Higgison who has become such a cornerstone of the scrum, while his Greytown-Tuhirangi teammate Brett Rudman is in the reserves. He too has made a favourable impression at prop in earlier appearances for the union this season.
Replacing Higgison and Rudman are Eketahuna strongman Brendan Walker and young South African Albertus Buckle, who after a relatively slow start became such an important member of the champion Carterton club side. Walker's strength is his physical presence at scrum time while Buckle uses his mobility to good effect in broken play situations
With the ever-consistent Sam Henderson being spelled the make-up of the Wairarapa-Bush loose forwards has an interesting look to it with Carterton's Brodie Duffin making his debut at No.8 and Mike Spence (Gladstone) and Sylvanus Iro (Greytown-Tuhirangi) on the flanks.
Iro is a virtual certainty for the Buller match but Duffin and Spence will require strong performances tomorrow to get the nod there. There is little doubt about their solidness on defence but they still have things to prove in both ball carrying and support play.
Both the Wairarapa-Bush B and under-20 sides will also be in action at Memorial Park tomorrow. The B's will be playing Wanganui on the No.2 ground and the under-20s Horowhenua-Kapiti on the No.1 ground, those games kicking off at 1pm.
Plenty to play for
