Featherston United made a welcome return to the Wairarapa interclub football scene this season, and achieved notable results in the process.
The highlight was reaching the plate final in the Knockout Cup competition, which was played last Saturday at Greytown, where they met Masterton Athletic and although beaten 4-2 they gave plenty of cheek. They led 2-1 at one stage and two of Athletic's goals came in the last 10 minutes of the game. Player of the day for Featherston United was Peter Wilson.
That match ended a season in which Featherston United participated in the Wairarapa competition for the first time since 2008. They were a mix of young and old with no fewer than five Kuranui College players in their line-up.
While it took them four games to celebrate their first success the longer the season ran the more competitive they became, something evidenced by their third placing in the second division league and their effort of making the Knockout Cup plate final.
Needless to say, the success of this year already has the Featherston United camp looking forward with confidence to 2013, although it is understood a few of their 2012 squad won't be available then.
