KEY POINTS:
New Zealand is stepping up airline security, to bring procedures into line with the rest of the world.
Auckland International Airport is bringing in tighter measures controlling the quantity of liquids, gels and aerosols passengers can take in their hand luggage. From today, containers of no more than 100 mls of liquid will be allowed on board planes. They will have to be carried in a special plastic bag.
The tighter measures follow a thwarted terrorist plot to blow up planes flying from Britain to the United States last October.
Airport chief Don Huse says it is time for New Zealand to show it is no soft touch.
The stringent new measures which are already commonplace around the world, are being adopted at about the same time as Australia is introducing them.
Mr Huse says all passengers are being asked to stop and think about what they pack before they set off, as it will save time and confiscation at the airport.
