Plans to eradicate a major biosecurity hazard in Canterbury will be put in place as soon as possible.
More than 2000 black grass seeds from Denmark spilled from an uncovered truck onto farmland along a 40-kilometre stretch of road from Ashburton to Methven.
The prohibited seeds were detected at the Lyttelton Port of Christchurch and were on their way to a containment centre when they spilled from the truck.
Federated Farmers grain and seeds spokesman David Clark said they have now met with the Ministry of Primary Industries and have a plan of attack.
"We've got a fighting chance to get rid of this black grass but that process is going to have to start quite soon. If we don't do anything in the next three to four months the battles lost as such," said Mr Clark.
